While there is always something going on in Hilton Head, summer months are especially busy. Here are a few things of note:
Drum Circle – June 9
We aren’t sure about this one, but a group called Hilton Head Vibes is hosting a Community Drum Circle at Coligny Beach June 9. This free event is open to anyone, and all are welcome to bring their own precussion instruments. And their dogs, apparently. If you are looking for something completely different, this may be the event for you. Visit their Facebook page to learn more.
Food Trucks – June 12
June 12, the Christian Renewal Church will have Food Truck night at 95 Gardner Drive from 6:30 to 8:30. There are lots of great places to eat on Hilton Head, but if you like the idea of sampling food from a truck well then come on down. It looks like there will be a lot of variety. To find out more about the event tak a look at the event they have posted on Facebook.
Hilton Head Parrot Palooza and Caribean Concert – Thursdays
Shelter Cove has done a special event every Thursday during the summer for as long as we can remember, and this summer they are having something called their Parrot Palooza Caribbean Concert. This event kicks of on Thursday, June 13 and will continue every Thursday until Aug. 22. They will also have it running for Labor Day Weekend. The show starts each Thursday evening at 7 p.m. and there are a lot of good restaurants you can take advantage of while you are there. But it does get crowded and parking is sometimes difficult, but if you have rented bikes it is an easy ride from Captains Walk. Just remember to cross 278 under the bridge (to your right as you exit Palmetto Dunes – follow the signs) and not try to cross at the intersection. Like everything else, you can visit the concert’s Facebook page to see the details.
Bluffton Sunset Party – June 14
This quite a hike – all the way to Bluffton. But this festival advertises craft beer, music, food, and other fun activities at the June 14 Bluffton Sunset Party hosted by the Bluffton Beer Festival. The event is held at the Oyster Factory Park on the May River (not the Old Oyster Factory Restaurant on Hilton Head, a great place to eat, by the way) and has become a tradition in now its seventh year. This monthly event might be for you – visit the party’s Facebook page to find out. The June party will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.
Speaking of Oyster Factory Park, the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy is hosting a clean sweep on the May River in Bluffton June 15. They want everyone to come five to 10 minutes early to find parking, have a cup of coffee and load up on supplies, some of which you will need to bring yourself (like garden gloves and a reusable water bottle). The park is beautiful, and the clean up is from 9 to 10:30 a.m. so if you went to the Sunset Party the night before and drank too much you might be there already. For more information, check out the event’s Facebook page.
Juneteenth Celebration – June 15
While you may not have heard of Juneteenth, spellcheck apparently has. This is an historic event which celebrates the Civil War-era rise of the first self-governed settlement for freedom in the U.S. — which was on Hilton Head Island. “In 1862 during the chaos of the Civil War, thousands of enslaved people in the coastal Carolinas, Georgia and Florida escaped to the Union fortification seeking freedom. They built a town named Mitchelville.”
The event will happen at Mitchelville Freedom Park — 229 Beach City Road — on June 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page.
Hilton Head Music Festival – June 22-23
Last but not least, the first-ever Hilton Head Island Music Festival is scheduled for June 22 and 23 at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. The festival will host 15 live performances and feature local favorites as well as musicians from all over the state and region, a news release from the festival said. Local food vendors and artists will also be there. For more information, check out hhimusicfest.com. If you have never been to the Coastal Discovery Museum, this would be a great time to visit!
