  • World’s Rarest Sea Turtles Hatch on Hilton Head

This year is shaping up to be a record year for Sea Turtles in Hilton Head (see Record Sea Turtles for 2019), but that is not the headline from Thursday, August 27.  Instead, the spotlight was on hatchlings emerging from the nest of the rarest Sea Turtle in the world, the Kemp Ridley turtle.  The subhead would be that these baby turtles also came from the first nest identified on Hilton Head this season almost 60 days ago. After a few days, the Turtle Patrol will wait a few more days and then go and see how many eggs didn’t hatch.  From there they will be able to determine how…

  • Record Sea Turtles for 2019?

A Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle became the first observed turtle to lay eggs this year on Hilton Head when she came ashore on April 26, 2019.  This nest was very special – not only was this the first 2019 nest, but it was also a very special species.  According to marine biologist Amber Kuehn there have only been four recorded nestings of a Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle in South Carolina. The sighting was even more unusual because she came ashore in the morning around 10:30 when there were many delighted beachgoers to…
